How to Fix Garage Door Sensors
How to Fix a Garage Door Sensor: A Step-by-Step Guide.
Fix Garage Door Sensors
A malfunctioning garage door sensor can be a real hassle. If your garage door won’t close or stops midway, chances are the sensor is the culprit. But before calling a professional, you can try to fix it yourself. Here’s a guide to help you troubleshoot and repair your garage door sensor.
A garage door sensor is a safety feature that prevents the door from closing if something is in the way. It consists of two sensors placed on either side of the garage door, near the floor. They work by sending an infrared beam across the door’s path. If this beam is interrupted, the door won’t close.
Common Issues with Garage Door Sensors
Misalignment: If the sensors are not properly aligned, the infrared beam is broken, and the door won’t close.
Dirty Lenses: Dust, dirt, or cobwebs on the sensor lenses can block the beam.
Sunlight Interference: Direct sunlight can interfere with the sensors, mimicking an obstruction.
Loose Wiring: Damaged or loose wiring can prevent the sensors from functioning properly.
Physical Damage: Bumps or hits to the sensors can cause them to malfunction.
Steps to Fix Your Garage Door Sensor
Check for Obstructions
Before doing anything else, ensure nothing is blocking the sensor’s path. Small objects, toys, or even leaves can disrupt the signal between the sensors.
Align the Sensors
If the lights are flickering or off, adjust the sensors until the lights are steady. Some sensors may have wingnuts for easy adjustment. Loosen them, realign the sensors, and tighten them back.
Reset the Sensors
Sometimes, all you need to do is reset the sensors. Unplug the garage door opener from the power source, wait for about 30 seconds, and then plug it back in. This can reset the sensors and resolve minor glitches.
Test for Sunlight Interference
If direct sunlight hits your sensor, it can disrupt its function. A temporary fix is to shade the sensor with a piece of cardboard or install a sun shield specifically designed for garage door sensors.
Clean the Sensor Lenses
Dirt on the lenses can prevent the sensors from working. Use a soft cloth to wipe off any dust, dirt, or cobwebs. Avoid using harsh chemicals, as they might damage the lens.
Check the Wiring
Inspect the wiring leading to the sensors. Look for any loose or frayed wires. If you find damaged wires, they may need to be replaced. Be cautious while working with wires, and if you’re uncomfortable handling electrical components, it’s best to call a professional.
Test the Garage Door
Once you’ve cleaned, realigned, and inspected the sensors, test the garage door. If it closes properly, your problem is solved. If it still doesn’t work, it may be time to call a professional.
