Fix Garage Door Sensors

Garage door sensors are essential for the safe operation of your garage door. These small but powerful devices prevent the door from closing if an object is in its path, which helps avoid accidents. However, like any electronic component, sensors can sometimes malfunction, causing the door to refuse to close properly. If you’re experiencing issues with your garage door sensors, follow these steps to troubleshoot and fix the problem.

Step 1: Check for Obstructions

The first and simplest fix is to check for any obstructions between the sensors. Garage door sensors work by sending a beam of light across the door’s path. If this beam is blocked by anything—such as dust, dirt, or even a spider’s web—the sensors will prevent the door from closing.

  • What to do: Clean the area around the sensors with a dry cloth. Make sure there’s no dirt, debris, or anything else obstructing the beam.

Step 2: Realign the Sensors

Garage door sensors must be perfectly aligned to function correctly. Misalignment is a common issue, especially if something has bumped into the sensors or the door frame has shifted.

  • What to do: Look at the two sensors located on either side of the door, typically a few inches above the ground. You’ll notice they each have a small light—one will be green (the sending sensor) and the other orange (the receiving sensor).
    • Loosen the screws or brackets holding the sensors in place.
    • Gently adjust the sensors until both lights are solid and not blinking.
    • Tighten the screws to secure them in position.

    Step 3: Check the Wiring

Wiring issues are another possible reason for malfunctioning garage door sensors. Over time, wires can become loose, frayed, or disconnected, causing a loss of power or improper function.

What to do: Inspect the wires leading to both sensors. Look for any signs of damage, wear, or disconnection. If you find loose wires, reconnect them carefully. If the wires are damaged, they may need to be replaced or spliced back together.

      • You may need a wire stripper and electrical tape to make any repairs.

Step 4: Test the Power Supply

If the sensors are properly aligned and unobstructed, and the wiring appears intact, the issue may be with the power supply. Each sensor should have a small indicator light that shows it’s receiving power. If these lights are off, it indicates a power problem.

      • What to do: Check that the garage door opener is plugged in and that the breaker hasn’t been tripped. If the opener is receiving power, but the sensors aren’t lighting up, it could indicate a more complex electrical issue that may require professional repair.

Step 5: Inspect for Sensor Damage

Over time, sensors can become damaged due to weather, impact, or general wear and tear. If the sensors themselves are physically damaged, they may need to be replaced.

        • What to do: Look for cracks, dents, or any other visible damage to the sensor casing. If you find significant damage, consider replacing the sensors. Make sure to purchase compatible sensors for your specific garage door opener model.

Step 6: Reset the Garage Door Opener

Sometimes, resetting your garage door opener can resolve sensor issues, especially if there’s been a recent power outage or electrical issue.

          • What to do: Unplug the garage door opener from the power source, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in. This will reboot the system and may clear any temporary malfunctions.

          Step 7: Call a Professional

If you’ve gone through these steps and your garage door sensors still aren’t working, it may be time to call in a professional. Sensor issues that stem from complex electrical problems, or more extensive damage, require the expertise of a trained technician.
